Tutorial on knitting scarves for beginners with no basic knowledge (text-only version)
Only use one stitch: straight stitch (lower stitch), no picking patterns, no twisting, and the knitting will be smooth and beautiful.

1. Prepare materials

  • Yarn: 1 ball of medium-thick yarn (most friendly to beginners)
  • Needles: 1 pair of 6mm or 7mm thick needles
  • Scissors

2. Starting the needle (the first step)

  1. Hold a needle in your left hand and wool in your right hand.
  2. Wrap the wool around the needle once, tie a slip knot, and put it on the needle.
  3. Recommended number of stitches: 20 to 24 stitches (the width is just right, novices will not be crowded or tired).
  4. Use the "winding trocar" method for each stitch, as long as the number of stitches is sufficient.

3. Start knitting: knit only straight stitches throughout the process

  1. Insert the right hand needle into the first loop of the left hand needle.
  2. Wrap the yarn around the right needle from back to front.
  3. Pick out the wound wire from the coil.
  4. Take off the loop on the left hand needle.
  5. Complete one stitch and repeat knitting to complete the row.
After knitting one row, exchange the positions of the two needles and continue to repeat the above steps.

4. What is the appropriate length of weaving?

  • Children's scarf: 100~120cm
  • Adult scarf: 150~180cm
The length is just as long as you feel comfortable, no need to strictly measure.

5. Narrowing (ending)

  1. Knit two forward stitches.
  2. Pick up the first stitch, cover it with the second stitch, and take it off.
  3. Knit another stitch and continue to cover the previous stitch.
  4. Repeat until only the last stitch is left, break the thread, insert the thread end into the loop and tighten.

6. Common problems for newbies

  • The weaving becomes wider: relax your hand and don’t pull too tight.
  • The more you weave, the narrower it becomes: don’t pull the thread too loosely.
  • There are holes: normal, novices can knit a few more rows and it will be smooth.
  • Crooked and twisted: practice two more rows and it will become smooth.
The whole process only requires three steps: starting the stitches → knitting the straight stitches → narrowing the stitches, and you can do it with your hands.
